An artist walks into McDonalds. No, that’s not the setup for a joke, it’s the opening sentence in my recent video where I document one of my non-traditional printmaking excursions. The script continues with…
He orders a two cheeseburger value meal with Coke. No onions. He’s carrying a tiny bottle of green liquid. The cashier is curious but doesn’t ask. (It’s acetone by the way.)
He eats the burgers but the real reason for this fast food is the receipt stuck to the cheeseburger wrappers.
There are some sunflowers nearby. Weeds, really. The artist cuts some of the flowers. He takes out his bottle and sprays the pedals until they are saturated in acetone. Then he presses the flower against the receipts to see what happens.
The experiment is a success. He sticks the receipt to a wall, snaps a photo, and walks away. I like to imagine that somebody saw that receipt and asked themselves,
“Is this art?”
If that person asked me, I would probably answer with something like,
“Hell if I know, I just work here.”
Thanks for reading. Stay creative.
