Police lights flash in the distance, distracting the crowds as they cruise the Las Vegas strip. I’m invisible. Looking for the right place to release an infestation.
There is a walkway with glass walls reflecting the flashes of the police cars. Beautiful. But it needs something. In my pocket is the echo of a dragonfly, a heat stencil I created for moments like this. It would be easy to put the sticker on the outside of the glass. Too easy. But what if I put it behind the glass on that stainless steel support beam?
With the dragonfly released I pause to appreciate the moment and recite the mantra of my Infestation project. “Beaty hides in plain sight, just waiting to be infested by your imagination.”
The dragonfly’s second life will be short. The wind will tear its exposed wing. The sun will reappear in the morning and burn its thin paper skin. But for a moment it flickers and glows, absorbing the spectacle of the city, reflecting the blinking lights and the blurry buzz of wandering souls. And maybe that’s the best any of us can hope for.
