Last week I was in Lincoln, Nebraska for the 4th of July. I snuck away from family activities a few times to scatter my art around the city. The result is this “Ballet Grunge” video I posted today. It features a ballerina spinning above the rusty, decaying surfaces of the city.
While I was out of town, a story about me was published by The Siren.
I get really self-conscious when someone writes (or says) nice things about me. What if they misrepresent my ideas? Luckily, Kat Knutsen of The Siren understands what I’m doing and was able to explain my work better than I can. I won’t repeat the entire article, but here are a couple teaser lines that I really enjoyed…
“Hanft’s studio looks more like a science lab than a traditional workspace.”
“His animations, often grainy and imperfect, find their strength in the very things most would edit out.”
What an honor. You can read the entire article here. I encourage you to sign up for The Siren’s newsletter and browse the other artist featured on the website. The Siren Instagram (@thesirensnb) is also worth a follow.
Stay creative.

Ballet Grunge is a superior piece of work! The Siren article was great, I like backstories- I learn a lot from them. Your work never fails to inspire, whatever the media. For me is the merging of analog/handwork and technology (both current and legacy) that really resonates. Finally the openness and generosity is very rare and much appreciated. Proceed with abandon!!!
I grew up in Lincoln!
